Info

The special exhibition demonstrates the multifaceted work of the artist Helga Gebert in all its narrative power.

Her illustrations guide the audience through countless stories, from the ‘Children’s and Household Tales’ of the Brothers Grimm to tales from ‘The Arabian Nights’. In the 1970s and 80s, Helga Gebert was regarded as one of the key figures in the renewal of German literature for children and young adults and was one of the regular authors and illustrators at the newly founded publishing house Beltz & Gelberg. Her fairy-tale books, children’s literature and children’s puzzles make a great impression on account of their poetic visual language, sensitivity and humour – and continue to have a profound impact to this day. The exhibition presents the artist’s motifs, working methods and biographical background.

The tour leads visitors through the thematic sections of the exhibition, demonstrating how Gebert transforms traditional narrative material into aesthetic pictorial spaces – thus representing a journey of discovery through Gebert’s fascinating worlds of characters.
